The CHARLEROI football club , also known as Royal CHARLEROI Sporting Club, is a team that has been steadily climbing up the ranks of Belgian football in recent years. The CHARLEROI stadium, also known as the Stade du Pays de CHARLEROI, is the home football stadium of the CHARLEROI team. It is located in the city of CHARLEROI, Belgium, and was inaugurated in 1939. The stadium has undergone several renovations since then, with the last major renovation taking place in 2013.
The stadium has a capacity of over 14,000 seats and is known for its electric and passionate atmosphere during CHARLEROI team matches. Supporters often gather in the stand 4 of the stadium, the best known group of supporters is under the name of Storm ultras, and is considered one of the most lively stands in Belgium.
The stadium also has a number of modern facilities, such as heated seats, VIP boxes, a giant screen, as well as conference and catering facilities. In addition to football matches, the stadium is also used for cultural and sporting events, such as concerts and extreme sports competitions.
Also, the stadium played a key role during UEFA Euro 2000, hosting three group stage matches of this prestigious tournament. The matches included the spectacular draw between Yugoslavia and Slovenia (3-3), England's victory over Germany (1-0), and the match between England and Romania (2-3).
Following UEFA Euro 2000, the stands received a Steel Construction Award but were later dismantled due to illegal construction actions instigated by local residents. One of the stands was relocated to the velodrome in Gilly.
