Charleroi is a city located in the province of Hainaut, Belgium. Known for its industrial past, the city has undergone an impressive transformation in recent years, with numerous renovation and revitalization projects underway. A visit to CHARLEROI allows you to discover its historical and cultural heritage, as well as its rapidly changing districts.

A visit to CHARLEROI can start at Place Vauban (Place Charles II), in the city centre. This bustling square is surrounded by Art Nouveau and Art Deco buildings, witnesses to the flourishing architecture of the city in the 1920s. In the center of the square was a statue of Charles II, King of Spain and the Netherlands, which gave its name to the city. Place Charles II is also a meeting place for the inhabitants of CHARLEROI, with many restaurants and cafes nearby.

Then, it is possible to head towards the historic center of CHARLEROI, where you can discover the Maison Dorée, an emblematic building of Art Nouveau. Built in 1899 by the architect Alfred Frère, this impressive building is decorated with stained glass, ceramics and ironwork. Today, the Maison Dorée houses a fashion boutique, but it is worth a visit for its remarkable architecture.

Another site to visit is Gare de CHARLEROI-Central, which is another outstanding example of Art Nouveau. This station, built in 1923 by the architect Louis Delacenserie, is famous for its imposing red brick facade and glass roof. It is considered one of the most beautiful stations in Belgium.

The Museum of Photography, located in the former Abbey of Mont-sur-Marchienne, is also an essential stopover during a visit to CHARLEROI. Founded in 1987, this museum is one of the most important photography museums in Europe. It houses a collection of over 80,000 photographs, some of which date back to the invention of photography. The museum also organizes temporary exhibitions throughout the year.

For those interested in the industrial history of the region, the Bois du Cazier is an unmissable site. This historic site, which was once a coal mine, is now a museum dedicated to the industrial history of the region. The museum houses exhibits on mining, as well as a collection of machines and tools used in the mines of the region. The Bois du Cazier is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

If you love castle life, the Castle Bilquin-de Cartier is a must-see. Located in Marchienne-au-Pont, it dates back to the early 17th century, built on the site of a former seigneurial manor. Initially owned by the Honoré family, it was acquired by the de Cartier family in 1725, who kept it for two centuries.

Likewise, the Castle of Monceau-sur-Sambre, dating mainly from the 17th and 18th centuries, is surrounded by a vast English-style park. Acquired by the commune in 1938, it was restored and classified as a historical monument in 1989.

Finally, for those who want to discover contemporary CHARLEROI, it is possible to go to the rapidly changing districts of the city, such as the lower town district. This neighborhood has undergone an impressive transformation in recent years, with many renovation projects underway.
